In March,2004, a caravan
including families, Military Families Speak Out (MFSO), who had lost their soldier
children in Iraq or whose children were serving in Iraq, families who had lost
loved ones in NY on 9/11, and Vets for Peace gathered at Dover Air Force Base.
Dover AFB is where the bodies of soldiers killed in Iraq are returned; media
is barred from witnessing their return;
President Bush had yet to attend a funeral. On day two, the group gathered at
Walter Reed Army Medical Center to highlight the treatment of more than 10,000
service men and women served in crowded, understaffed facilities. Many wounded
Iraqi vets are treated at Reed. The Commander-In-Chief of the Vets of Foreign
Wars called the new Bush under funded health care budget "a disgrace and
a sham."
These families are angered by the deceptions for going to war and the attempt
to hide the human cost.
